Our Story

Since 1973, Red Smith Foods has earned a reputation for producing the finest quality pickled snacks in the industry.

History By The Bite

 
 

1967

Brothers David & Steve Foster

1973

Stephen & David Foster along with two partners acquire S.W. Red Smith, a pickled foods company based in Miami, Florida. Within the decade, people associate our Egg Head and Sausage Man mascots with high-quality pickled snacks.

 
 

1978

The company acquires Big John’s, a local competitor. After a revamp of ingredients and a boost in quality, Big John’s joins our product lineup and becomes more popular than our Red Smith branded offerings. A couple of years later, the company moves from Miami to Port Everglades.

1995

The Foster family assumes management of the company. The next year, we build our facility in Davie, Florida, where we still make all our pickled snacks today.

 
 

2005

Tim & Jon Foster (4th generation of Foster's working together) join the business securing family ownership and management for years to come.

2008

We change our name from S.W. Red Smith to Red Smith Foods to better reflect our snack food business. In another big company change, we consolidated operations from our St. Petersburg, Florida facility into our Davie location four years later, streamlining our business.

 
 

2013

We embark on our grab-and-go snack journey with individually wrapped pickled sausages. Individually wrapped pickled pigs feet and shelf-stable individually wrapped eggs follow in 2016.

2020

Red Smith Foods wins Best New Product award from Convenience Store News for Big John’s individually wrapped pickled eggs.

 
 

2023

Red Smith Foods celebrates 50th anniversary
